Let the Madness Begin

Summers are hot in Vegas, winters are bipolar (sometimes hot, sometimes cold) and spring… well mostly windy/cold days as it transitions from winter for the month of March. There are usually a couple of warm days throughout the weeks and Vegas takes full advantage of them. Hence the reason all the pools are opening for the season. That is only one element to look forward to. March Madness kicks off next week along with Nightclub & Bar convention, schools begin Spring Break and let’s not forget St. Patrick’s Day that is celebrated all weekend long in Vegas. So here is my guide to March 2012 and things to expect and what not to miss.

Pool Season
I swear the pools open up earlier every year. Pretty soon we will be partying with bikinis and parkas in February. Tomorrow you can leave your parka at home because it is supposed to be in the low 70’s and sunny for the grand opening of Wet Republic, the first pool to open for the season. Bare Pool lounge opens Monday, March 12 and Liquid Pool Lounge opens Thursday, March 15. Both openings will have an open bar all day for locals. Palms Pool and Bungalows is hosting MTV Spring Break 2012 with the cast of Jersey Shore, Young Jeezy, Dev and The Wanted from March 20 -22. Tao Beach will return Monday, April 2 with its sister property, Marquee Dayclub opening Saturday, April 21 with Avicii. Encore Beach Club will also open Saturday, April 21 with Steve Angelo. The famous pool party at Rehab kicks off Sunday, April 22 with no lineup announced yet, but you can expect to hear about it sooner than later. A new pool is coming this summer due to open Memorial weekend… but you will have to stay tuned for details.

Nightclub & Bar Convention/March Madness
The most anticipated convention and sports draw to Las Vegas both kick off Tuesday, March 13. The city is going to be packed! 1Oak Nightclub is also launching its Industry Night on March 13 with a special performance by Bruno Mars. The Nightclub & Bar Convention will have its first party Monday night at XS with Lil Jon. Tuesday night, Marquee Nightclub will host the Nightclub & Bar Top 100 Party with special guest host Ne-Yo. The party will continue on Wednesday at Tao Nightclub with 50 Cent and Street King. There will also be a lot of celebrities at the convention promoting new liquors and perhaps some of their own. To get a premium pass to the convention and all the parties, all you have to do is pay $495. Just think of it as buying a bottle one night in club and you don’t have to tip… well, unless you buy a drink. The convention is a lot of booze and a lot people, so at least you will get your money’s worth.

As for March Madness, the sports books will be popping off in every casino until the championships are completed. There are few places offering drink and food specials such as LBS Burger Joint, PBR Rock Bar & Grill and restaurants and bars through Harrah’s.

St. Patrick’s Day
Ireland invades Las Vegas every St. Patrick’s Day, but with it being on a Saturday this year, it has pretty much taken over. This is the first year for the Dublin Down Festival being held at the Thomas & Mack Center on Friday, March 16. The festival kicks off at 4 p.m. with music, food and drink with Flogging Molly headlining at 8 p.m. Tickets are all general admission for $24.50 and can be purchased at UNLV tickets. GBDC (ghostbar dayclub) is kicking it off with a St. Patty’s Day Bash, Vanity is celebrating with House of Pain and Pure Nightclub is hosting a St. Patio Party. I’m sure all the clubs and bars will be encompassing some sort of Irish element for the evening. If you want to celebrate at an actual Irish pub there’s one in every neighborhood.

  • Ri Ra Irish Pub at Mandalay Bay
  • Nine Fine Irishmen at New York-New York
  • J.C. Whooloughan Irish Pub at the JW Marriott (221 North Rampart Blvd)
  • McMullan’s Irish Pub – W Tropicana next to Orleans
  • Quinn’s Irish Pub at Green Valley Ranch
  • Jack’s Irish Pub at Palace Station
  • Fado Irish Pub & Restaurant – 9470 Eastern Ave
  • Hennessey’s Tavern – Fremont Street (Downtown)
  • Molly Malone’s Irish Pub – Southern Highlands Pkwy

There are two Irish theme casinos in Las Vegas, O’ Shea’s on the strip and Fitzgerald’s downtown. I personally love O’ Shea’s for the dive theme and cheap drinks. Vegas can be very last minute at times so you can expect events to pop up at the last minute. Make sure to check spyonvegas.com for all updated information.
