Recently I met with a home owner and he indicated that they had recently moved into the house.  Red Square was on property conducting a routine inspection of the equipment and offering general instructions on proper maintenance.
One of the questions I always ask is “Are there children living at the home?”.  The home owner responded there was a young child however they were a confident swimmer.  They were considering a pool fence but this was not a priority.  He went on to say that they had an alarm on the back sliding door, however they had pulled the battery out since it makes a loud and disruptive sound when the door is open.
In the interest of parents, caregivers and those with small children in the house I did some research an found some pretty surprising statistics.  Please read below:
  • 69% of the drowning incidents occurred while one or both parents were responsible for supervision.
  • 10were adults other than the parents.
  • 14were sitters.
  • 7siblings
  • 65of the drowning incidents were in a pool owned by the child’s family.
  • 22at a relatives
  • 11happened at a neighbor’s.
  • 77% of the children had been seen 5 minutes or less before being missed and subsequently discovered in the pool.

Where were they last seen?

  • 46WERE LAST SEEN IN THE HOUSE prior to being found in the pool. Of these, 15were thought to be sleeping.
  • 23were last seen in the yard, porch or patio, not in the pool area. That’s a total of 69 percent that were thought not to be in the pool area.
  • 31were last seen in the pool or pool area.
  • 39of the people responsible for supervising the child were doing chores.
  • 18socializing.
  • 9were busy on the telephone.

The extra-strong, marine quality aluminum poles which support Pool Barrier™ fences were engineered specifically for us with unique TRI-Core construction for added rigidity.
They are force-fitted into non-conductive plastic sleeves embedded in the pool’s surrounding deck surface.
