For those residents of Southern Nevada you may want to take the time to read this post. Everyone is buzzing about how to “lower our carbon footprint” and “going green”, however after closer review, there can be some sizable investments upfront. Furthermore, one of the best ways to validate “Green Solutions” is based on a simple R.O.I. (Return On Investment) formula. I always look for an ROI to be around 14 months when looking at different solutions. Bottom line, if the product or service will pay for itself in 14 months, and provide a tangible return into the future, it’s definitely worth investigating.
It IS possible to “Go Green” WITHOUT a front end investment.
Besides the obvious answer of lowering your power consumption (shutting off lights, keeping your thermostat at 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit, using only fluorescent or LED light bulbs, etc.); why not consider NV Energy’s T.O.U. Program. The TOU Program (Time Of Use) is a simple program that offers a lower price per kW (kiloWatt) during different times of the day.
The following information was provided from NV Energy Website
NV Energy wants to make it simple for you to save money on your electric bill.
The NV Energy Time of Use rate provides you with a choice. Customers who are willing to reduce consumption during periods when the total demand for electricity is highest, (the peak) will save money.
This peak is between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily, June through September, when the weather is hottest and electricity use is greatest.
You can see a break-down of the Time of Use rates in our Residential Rate Schedule.
If your time schedule allows you to use most of your energy during off-peak hours during the summer, you could save money.
Benefits of the Time-Of-Use Program:
- There’s no risk in trying the TOU program for the first year due to the Guaranteed Lowest Rate* (GLR) feature.
- Shifting your on-peak usage to mid-peak or off-peak will keep your rates down.
- Preserves the environment.
- Notice: In order to participate in this TOU Rate program, you must allow NV Energy access to your electric meter. Participation, however, is not guaranteed – you must be pre-qualified.
Guaranteed Lowest Rate (GLR)*
If after the first 12-month period, we find that you have spent more on the TOU Rate than you would have spent on the standard rate, we will refund the difference and restore you to the standard rate (if you choose). In order to receive the annual savings associated with being on the TOU rate, you are requested to remain on the program for a full 12 months.
Rates Effective January 1, 2010
